Compulsive Behaviour

  • Repeated and consistent behaviours that a person does despite them being troubling and having bad effects
  • Can be one or more compulsive behaviours which can range from reducing a person’s capacity to being dangerous
  • Example behaviours and areas:
    • Shopping
    • Hoarding
    • Eating
    • Gambling
    • Sex
    • Body Focused
    • Obsessions
    • Internet Use
    • Games
    • Eating
    • Exercise
  • Commit to positive values as reasons to reduce or stop compulsive behaviours. For example, I am doing this action as a healthier choice.
    • Increase healthy activities such as being social with other people, physical activity, mindful meditation
  • Do therapy and treatment with health professionals including medicine
    • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
    • Psychodynamic psychotherapy
    • Group therapy and support
  • For private/accessible compulsive behaviours, make the behaviour less private or less accessible
    • Remove ease of access, reminders to behaviours
  • Habit replacement: replace compulsive behaviours with positive behaviours
  • Stay compassionate to yourself
