CS 501 Project for the Cornell Legal Information Institute

PDF versions of the United States Code

Project Information: Deliverables | Links

PROJECT SUMMARY:

The United States Code is released to the general public by the US House of Representatives on its Web site (at http://uscode.house.gov/download.htm ). This is a fairly plain-vanilla ASCII version to which the Legal Information Institute adds value (visible at http://www4.law.cornell.edu/uscode/ ). An earlier CS 501 team (Legal Data Markup Software Project) and a later student project developed programs for the Legal Information Institute that convert the raw ASCII output of the House of Representatives to XML, for subsequent reuse in various settings. The US Code currently gets about half a million hits daily.

This group project was to create PDF versions from the existing XML based on the user interface which already supports searching of sections of legal code. These PDFs would be requested from http://www4.law.cornell.edu/uscode/ via a shopping cart system where cart functionality is present in each division of legal code. The idea is then to conduct on-the-fly XML to PDF conversion following credit card verification. Then the user would receive an email of the PDF document containing the sections of code requested along with additional information.
